Dr. Laurie Shulman has been our faithful and inspired program annotator and presenter of our pre-concert forums for many years. Laurie also has devoted fans — students, musicians, composers, publishers and the dozens of musical organizations she has served through both her writing and her presentations. Her style is as entertaining as it is informative.
She is well known to North Texas classical music audiences as the program annotator for the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, the contemporary music ensemble Voices of Change, and the Chamber Music Society of Fort Worth.
She holds a B.A.from Syracuse University in European History and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Cornell University in historical musicology.
Dr. Shulman is a contributor to The New Grove, The New Grove Dictionary of Opera, Tempo, Stagebill, Chamber Music Magazine, and other music-related publications. More recently, she has contributed articles to prestigious and scholarly internet music sites. She has also furnished compact disc liner notes for more than a dozen record companies, and is an active amateur pianist.
Ms. Shulman’s book, The Meyerson Symphony Center: Building a Dream, was published in 2000 by University of North Texas Press.
One hour before each Voices of Change concert, composers in attendance join Dr. Shulman for informal interviews and questions from audience members. Attending these Forums helps prepare listeners for deeper understanding and enjoyment of the music.
